This species is resident (and peripatetic from fall to spring) at high latitudes in Eurasia and North America, comprising 16 currently recognized subspecies. Six of these in North America vary from one another in details of the plumage of summer males, overall size, and size and shape of the bill. Three are currently recognized in Alaska, where L. l. alascensis, described from the Kobuk River Delta, is the widespread form.
